Modulation: every effect side by side
The 14 modulation effects of the Motif ES at their default settings, one per row. Every column uses one scale from top to bottom, so anything that looks bigger, faster or brighter in one row than in another really is.
In plain terms: read across a row to get one effect's character, read down a column to compare them all on one quality. Click a column title to sort by it; click a row to open that effect's controls. Under the board: each effect's controls setting by setting, then 3 detailed charts, closed until you open them.
Modulationclick a row for its controls Each side through time The size of the left (cyan) and right (amber) sides over three seconds of steady noise, against their own average. How fast ↕ Rises and falls per second, and whether the two sides do it together or take turns. How far ↕ The swing between quietest and loudest moments, as a share of the average size. Tone ↕ The effect's tone at its default settings: bass left, treble right; above the line is boosted, below is cut. Left against right ↕ +1 = the same on both sides (sits in the middle), 0 = unrelated (wide), below 0 = opposite. The mark is 0. sort by: How fast How far Tone Left against right

Controls, setting by setting
One sheet per effect. Every tested setting of a control sits next to the others on the same axes, with the default setting drawn as a thin line inside each cell, so a small difference between two settings is two neighbouring cells, not two screens.
ring colour: barely changes the sound changes it a lot ▬ first 200 ms after a click▬ tone against the default
Amp+Rotary SP 1 every control, every tested setting Each row is one control. Its ring is its travel, coloured by how much the sound changes along it. To the right, first every tested setting of that control overlaid (its tone against the default, low setting cyan to high setting amber; ▶ play steps through them one at a time and marks the matching cell), then one cell per tested setting: on top the first 200 ms after a click (thin line = the default setting), under it the change in tone against the default (flat = no change; above the line = brighter at that pitch).

Every pair of controls that was recorded at all four corners (each at its low and its high test setting). A cell is what the second control does to the tone, bass left to treble right: cyan with the first control low, amber with it high. The two lines lying on each other means the controls simply add; lines apart means one changes what the other does. The pairs furthest apart come first. On an effect that moves by itself some of the gap is the movement caught at a different moment.

Auto Pan every control, every tested setting Each row is one control.

Dist+Rotary SP 1 every control, every tested setting Each row is one control.

Not shown, because these recordings show no measurable change from them: Low Frequency.

What each control does in physical units, from the probes made for it: the line is the reading as the control goes from its lowest setting (left) to its highest (right), and the numbers under it are the reading at those two ends. Each cell has its own height scale.
Stepped with these probes too, and the reading did not move: Drive High, Horn Speed Fast, Horn Speed Slow, Horn Transition Time, Rotor Speed Fast, Rotor Speed Slow, Rotor Transition Time.

Dual Rotor SP 2 every control, every tested setting Each row is one control.

What each control does in physical units, from the probes made for it: the line is the reading as the control goes from its lowest setting (left) to its highest (right), and the numbers under it are the reading at those two ends. Each cell has its own height scale.

Odrv+Rotary SP 2 every control, every tested setting Each row is one control.

Tremolo every control, every tested setting Each row is one control.

Detailed charts
The measurements behind the board, at full size, each with what it shows, how to read it and what it found.
In plain terms: the board gives the comparison at a glance; open one of these when you want the full picture of a single quality.
Each side turned up and down, from moment to moment What it shows. Steady noise, the same in both speakers, through each effect at its default settings. Every 10 ms the size of what comes out of each side is compared with the same moment of the noise recorded with no effect.
How to read it. Time runs left to right. A line at 100 is that side at its average size; above is louder, below quieter. Cyan is the left side, amber the right. Lines that rise and fall together are a tremolo; lines that take turns are a pan; the shape of the wave (smooth, pointed, lopsided) is the shape of the effect's modulator. Use the slider to change effect.
What it found.
Amp+Rotary SP 1: 2.69 times a second, the left side swinging between 61% and 132% of its average; the two sides rise and fall together. Auto Pan: 2.69 times a second, the left side swinging between 41% and 161% of its average; the two sides take turns (one is up when the other is down). Auto Pan 2: 2.69 times a second, the left side swinging between 44% and 176% of its average; the two sides take turns (one is up when the other is down). Dual Rotor SP 2: 3.03 times a second, the left side swinging between 47% and 165% of its average; the two sides rise and fall together. Dual Rotor SP 3: 3.31 times a second, the left side swinging between 45% and 153% of its average; the two sides rise and fall together. Tremolo: 2.69 times a second, the left side swinging between 40% and 160% of its average; the two sides rise and fall together. Not drawn: Amp+Rotary SP 2, Dist+Rotary SP 1, Dist+Rotary SP 2, Dual Rotor SP 1, Odrv+Rotary SP 1, Odrv+Rotary SP 2, Rotary SP 1, Rotary SP 2. They move, but no regular rise and fall could be read; a moving delay (as in a rotary speaker) changes the noise in ways this comparison cannot separate from loudness. The stereo LFO drawn as an orbit What it shows. The pitch of the left channel plotted against the pitch of the right, traced over ten seconds of a held chord (a different note in each channel, so each can be followed separately) at default settings. Time is not an axis: the LFO draws the same figure once per cycle.
How to read it. A line along the rising diagonal means both channels go sharp and flat together (one LFO for both). A line along the falling diagonal means they move in opposite directions. A loop that encloses area means one channel leads the other; a circle or square is a quarter cycle apart, which is what makes a chorus seem to rotate. Corners mean a triangle-wave LFO, rounded figures a sine. Use the slider to step through the effects.
What it found.
Left and right move together: Amp+Rotary SP 1 (+26°), Odrv+Rotary SP 1 (+26°), Rotary SP 1 (+29°). Left and right move a quarter cycle apart: Amp+Rotary SP 2 (−95°), Dual Rotor SP 1 (−56°), Dual Rotor SP 2 (−57°), Dual Rotor SP 3 (−58°), Odrv+Rotary SP 2 (−95°). Left and right move without a fixed relation: Rotary SP 2 (−44°). The angle is the lead of the left channel over the right, averaged over the recording. The tracker follows one partial in a ±100 cent band, so swings beyond about ±60 cents are flattened and multi-voice effects, whose voices beat against each other, draw a tangle rather than a clean figure. Which controls depend on each other What it shows. Every pair of controls that was recorded at all four corners, each control at its low and its high test setting, for the Modulation effects. For each pair: what the second control does to the tone with the first one low, what it does with the first one high, and how far apart those two are as a share of the larger.
How to read it. One dot is one pair; hover for which. At the left edge the second control does the same thing wherever the first one is, so the two simply add. At the right edge it does something at one end of the first control and nothing, or the opposite, at the other. The same pairs are drawn as curves on each effect's sheet above, under two controls together.
What it found.
Of 95 pairs in which the second control changes the tone, 68 are ones where the first control changes what the second does. The pair furthest apart is Low High Balance with Divide Frequency on Rotary SP 2. Tone only is compared, smoothed over about two thirds of an octave, so a change in timing alone does not show here. On an effect that moves by itself part of any gap is the movement caught at a different moment.
Each effect's written breakdown, its measurement card and every single-control chart are on the
detail page (large).
